Liver-Tree of Life
Wednesday, March 16, 2011
7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
with Liliane Papin, PhD
$10.00 at the door
Asheville Macrobiotic Alliance Lecture
In Chinese medicine and macrobiotic philosophy, Liver and Gall Bladder energy are associated with Tree or Wood energy as well as the Spring season. Not only is this a fascinating ecological model for our body, it is also one that is increasingly supported by emerging scientific research. This model, both simple and extremely sophisticated, can help us understand our liver functions and give us guidance on how to support
it during its Spring season. What we are going to study together in this class:
First theoretical part:
How the concept of Tree (Wood) energy can help us understand our Liver and Gall Bladder functions
Review some amazing scientific data that validate and update this ancient Oriental model
The main signs and symptoms associated with the disruption of Liver energy
Gallbladder functions: why is it the most common surgery today?
The emotional manifestations of balance and imbalance of Liver Tree energy
Second practical part:
How to apply the understanding of Tree energy to our health and well-being
Steps to support new growth in our inner Wood and Liver ecology
Our allies: foods, drinks and herbs to till the soil in the spring
How we can use the universal concept of “spring cleansing” for personal rejuvenation
The emotional & spiritual direction our inner tree and those of our planets are pointing out for us
Didier will help us relax in the midst of all that information with a few simple yoga stretches to warm our body and cool our overheated minds, a major Liver Tree function. We will also start with a beautiful, simple Daoist Inner Smile meditation to connect with the Tree of Life inside of us.

“Chronic & Life Threatening Diseases”
7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
$10.00 at the door
Asheville Macrobiotic Alliance Lecture
Acute and chronic illnesses are out of control in America. In this lecture, Dr. Cottrell will present and discuss current western medical approaches to disease and the effects they are having on the physical, mental, and economic well-being of the individual as well as the country. We will explore how to take charge of our lives and have a personal impact on disease and illness rather than relying on western medicine for total health.
Some topics that will be discussed are:
How Western Medicine Addresses
The concept of preventive medicine
Its influence on patients’ attitudes and choices concerning “healthcare”
The political and economic repercussions in so-called “health care”
Taking a different approach as to what constitutes health promotion and prevention
What really contributes to health and disease
Ways in which we can take control of our health
Understanding what constitutes the foundation of promoting health
Looking at genetics, family history and “risk” and how we can neutralize these
“risks” by understanding “promoter factors”
>>>A question and answer period will follow<<<
“The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest their patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” —Thomas Edison
“Address the cause not treat the symptoms. It’s not about crisis intervention, it’s about promoting health.”
—Martha C. Cottrell, MD
Dr. Martha C. Cottrell is a licensed physician in New York and Board Certified in Family Medicine. She is a cum laude graduate of Mercer University, Macon, Ga. and graduate of Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. 7:30 - 9 PM
sliding scale contribution: $8 - 20
"Mystic and Mouthpiece, Elle Collier Re is a living koan. The way she unfolds words hits you like an electric shock. The walls shimmer when she elevates the frequency of a room. True community springs up around her like a field of flowers. She radiates invincible goodness, a tangible goodness that, amazingly, you find taking root in yourself. Given the dark state of human affairs and our great struggle with ‘shadow’, I find that rather remarkable. She is also utterly accessible. You can weep in her presence, you can laugh with abandon, you can rage with misery, you can blaze with light. You can, at last, be exactly yourself. Elle manages to convince you that even now you yourself are a unique expression of divinity."

In this 6-week series, I will share some insights that I have learned over the past 15 years of yoga practice that enable us to become stronger, and our posture more free and upright. See you in class! -Danielle
