How to Practice and Teach Yoga Asana
with Roger Cole, PhD
Friday
2 - 5 pm
Teaching Successful Restorative Yoga
The key to teaching a successful restorative yoga class is to choose the most effective poses and set them up skillfully so as to create the essential physical and psychological conditions for deepest relaxation. This workshop will show you how to set up those conditions and give you detailed training in the poses that work best, including how to align, prop, observe, adjust and sequence them.
6:30 - 9 pm
Restorative Yoga: Deep Practice
This entire session is devoted to practicing restorative yoga to give you the deepest relaxation possible. Roger will guide you through a sequence of supported postures, using his expert knowledge as both a yoga teacher and sleep scientist to help you get the most out of each one. Wear warm, loose clothing, including socks. Props are provided, but if possible, please bring extra yoga blankets and a small towel, eye mask, eye pillow, or cloth bandage to cover your eyes.
Saturday
10:45 - 1:45 pm
How to Practice and Teach Standing Poses and Twists
This class will teach you how to build strong, free and beautiful standing poses and twists by observing essential anatomical and yogic principles of alignment and action. After refining your own practice, you will learn how to apply the same principles to teaching the poses to others.
3- 6 pm
The Art of Sequencing
In music, the selection, order and timing of the notes makes all the difference. The same holds true in practicing and teaching yoga asanas. This workshop will teach you how to choose and sequence poses to create the soothing, strengthening, mobilizing, and balancing effects you want in your own practice and in teaching others.
Sunday
8:30 - 11:30 am
How to Practice and Teach Back Bends
Back bends are among the most difficult poses to practice and teach because their correct alignment and actions are counterintuitive to most people. In this workshop, you will hone your back bending skills by systematically isolating and working key joints and muscles while consciously engaging breath and mind, then you will learn to teach these techniques to others.
1-3:30 pm
How to Practice and Teach Inversions and Variations
Dramatically improve your practice and teaching of inversions by consciously optimizing the placement of the hands, wrists, shoulders, neck and head, then working your way up the body to align the whole pose. The class will cover handstand, headstand, shoulderstand and their many variations. You will learn to make modifications to accommodate students who have less experience or special needs.
