The 500 hr program at Lighten Up Yoga is a natural continuation of yoga studies for those students who have clearly dedicated themselves to yoga and to teaching. The program will assist participants in integrating the many aspects of yoga to better serve their students and themselves.

For Yoga Alliance registration - attend 4-6 weekends a year to successfully complete your required 14 advanced training weekend modules in three or four years.

Why a 500 hr program at Lighten Up?              

• Clarify the language of teaching, develop class themes and effective sequences

Home Study: We ask our 500 hr teachers in training to simply journal their weekly teaching and personal practice time on a grid. Homework assignments are given 30 days prior to each training weekend for that weekend. Following each weekend teachers in training will submit a one page paper and two self-evaluations of classes they have taught.

As there are many branches of yoga to study and explore, it is necessary for the purposes of this course that students have an understanding of the alignment principles of yoga. To satisfy this goal and to adequately prepare you for success in our 500 hr course, the following 3 weekends are the pre-requisite weekends offered in 2011. Preliminary weekends count towards your total 14 required weekend modules.

June 10-12, 2011

Yoga and the Organ Systems: A study of physiology and corresponding yoga poses. Yoga for Multiple Sclerosis and other special needs, including an overview of MS as a disease process, the particular needs of the MS student, chair poses, and the study and practice of inversions as restoration. Panel discussion and practice with student models who are living with MS. Pranayama, meditation, and practice teaching.

October 21-23, 2011

Alignment and the Asymmetric Body. How to address sacroiliac joint function and dysfunction, and short leg or spastic piriformis syndrome. Progressions and refinements for an inversions practice. Pranayama, meditation, and practice teaching.

August 12-14, 2011- Retreat setting

Preventing Yoga Injuries: Knees, Shoulders, and Hips. Philosophy: the study of Ahimsa (non-violence) on and off the mat, The power of Gratitude, the Emotional Freedom Technique as a tool for transformation. Yoga adaptations for osteoporosis and seniors. Tools for accessing the health and abilities of a new student.

This course, recognized by Yoga Alliance is not associated with the National Iyengar Association. To become a certified Iyengar Teacher requires years of study and practice. Graduates of this course are encouraged to move toward Iyengar Certification by studying with Iyengar Certified teachers.

Module #1 2009  

The Gift of Resistance in Asana. Teaching the overly stiff and overly flexible body. The art of adjusting poses; develop language for successful verbal adjustments, hands on adjusting, and application of principles on student models. Introduction to Ayurveda with Haeyoung Grace Kandl. Pranayama and meditation, and practice teaching. Please confirm attendance by May 25, 2009 in order to receive your homework assignments.

Module #2  2009

Yoga for Heart Health and Sleep Disorders with guest instructor Linda Camarada. Weekend to cover the anatomy and physiology of heart disease, contemporary approaches in medicine, and beneficial sequencing from Indra Devis heart program and the Iyengar method. Restorative pose for sleep, pranayama and meditation, and practice teaching. Please confirm attendance by September 25, 2009 in order to receive your homework assignments.

Residential Equinox Yoga Teachers Retreat

Successful sequencing and class organization. Finding stability and ease in asana. Yoga philosophy on and off the mat. Includes detailed guidance and handouts on how to create effective sequences, class organization, and how to link actions. Yamas and Niyamas in yoga class, pranayama and meditation.

Module #4 2010

Exploring Chakras as energy and evolution with Laurel Mamet.  Unfolding backbends: the path of an open heart. The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali as an evolutionary guide. Weekend to include the physical, physiological and psychological components of the seven chakras, asanas to apply to each chakra, backbend progressions to educate the psoas muscles and improve posture. Pranayama, meditation, and practice teaching.

Module #5 2010

Healing Our Backs: Understanding back pain, breath and the mind with Lillah. Including applied Back Care for the low back, neck and shoulders, progressions for building abdominal strength, when to use weight bearing and non-weight bearing poses, guidelines for creating a balanced posture.  Student models. Pranayama and meditation, and practice teaching.

Module #6 2010- retreat setting

The 5 Koshas (levels of consciousness) as reflected in asana, pranayama, and meditation. Philosophy: the practice of Bramacharya as intension and moderation in action. Shoulder anatomy, and the application of classic and adaptive yoga poses for carpel tunnel, post computer and travel concerns.
